The new year is coming up for 2023 and many people are gearing up to make some new year’s resolutions. Of those new year’s resolutions, financial resolutions is the main focus for many people. My help to you is to give you some suggestions on what you should do to acquire more income and why you should do it. I really hope that you have success in the long term and that you can get the financial empowerment you need to move forward in life, so let us begin!
Software Developer
If you don’t know what software development is, then know that it is simply the art of creating programs on computers. If you think about websites, calculators, smart phones, etc, then you would that those electronics require some sort of programming. Bill gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Wozniak, Grace Hooper are just some examples of people who were software developers to create many of the programs that we see today. Now if you want to learn how and where to do software programming I have a few suggestions below and will give explanations for each.
–C Programming Absolute Beginner’s Guide by Greg Perry Dean Miller
–CS50: Introduction to Computer Science
–MDN Web Docs
–Odin Project
C programming absolute beginner’s guide will explain to you the basics of programming using the c language. Since ‘C’ , the programming language, is a low level language, it can be the best language to start for you to understand higher level languages such as python, javascipt (JS), etc. If you have 6 months to a year to practice programming fundamentals, then this is the perfect book for you.
CS50: Introduction to Computer Science is an online course from Harvard that teaches you programming from an experienced Harvard instructor who will guide you week to week on what you need to do. On the website, it says the course takes 12 weeks, but based on many peoples’ experience in the course, it may very well take longer than that. If you want to learn programming fundamentals fast and hard in 3 months or more, then this is the course for you.
MDN Web Docs is an online resources aggregator developed by Mozilla to help you become a better web developer. Html, CSS, JavaScript as well as various frameworks are going to be taught here. If you have a year that you can take to learn how to do web development, then this is the site you should pick.
Odin Project is similar to MDN in that they teach web development and other other backend frameworks, but here you have a community similar to cs50 and have a track to find reputable employers. If you have 1-2 years to develop webdev skills then this is the curriculum you should take.
If you have the capital or you have scholarships then your best bet is for you to go to college and major in computer science. There you will learn the fundamentals of computer science and software from a holistic approach then doing self-taught work online.
Now at this point, you may be asking “why is Chris recommending software development for me to make money, especially if it is going to take months and years to get great?” Software development is the career that best rewards financially of all the career paths currently. If you have the discipline and the grit, then you can have a skill that can net you hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars during your life time.
Secondly, if you are a person that goes to college, you would never expect to finish college in a short amount of time. Most people don’t judge college in 2-5 years increments, so I suggest that you take time to grow your skills so you can be as successful as you can your whole life.
Right now as I write this, there are numerous tech companies that are laying people off and are going through a hiring freeze. This can instill fear and trepidation in many people, but you shouldn’t fear. Tech is not going away and is only going to grow in the future with automation, AI, and machine learning. Software Development is a field that is constantly changing so you have to be studying intensely to get the financial results you want in the long run.
** Just as a side note, web development is just one path you can take when becoming a software developer. You can choose to do mobile development, embedded development, quant, native development. Etc.
CMS (Content Management Systems)
CMS are a way to organize content and get revenue. If you think about WordPress, squarespace, wix, these are companies that specialize in content management. People who are bloggers, restaurant owners, news outlets, or even people who are just starting out building a website, will eventually need to figure out how to properly categorize and structure their content.
Besides software programming, I recommend you do CMS because you would have an easier time to sell whatever product or service you may have to make more money.
If you need help with how to start A CMS then click this link from udemy
This resource shows you how to get a website, hosting, and what to do with your site as you feel fit. This will cost money and it will take a while for you to have success on your website. 1-5 years is what I believe it will take for you to have as much success as you can in the long run for what you may do, assuming you are a blogger atleast.
Electronics Operator
Electronics Operator is a person that know how to operate electronics. That is it. If you are reading this from a phone, laptop, desktop, or even a tablet then you know how to operator electronics. It may sound broad and vague, which it is, but you will need to know this skill if you want to further have success in this world. Everything you are surrounded by uses electronics these days and it is up to you to learn how to use those electronics in your day to day life. Everyone uses it, from young children to the elderly, from the handicap to physically fit.
If you are wondering what to do as an electronics operator, then it is simply anything that deals with electronics and specializing in that area. If you like computers, do computer science. If you like writing, then do blogging. Whatever you can think about in the physical world, there probably is an electronic component with that tangible in the physical world. If people need help setting up a ring doorbell camera, you can charge them. If they need help with programming, you can charge them for tutoring.
Video Editor
I am sure you have watched some youtube videos before. Mrbeast, pewdiepie, etc. Whichever your field of expertise may be, you can you make money from video editing, which is the alteration of visual graphics. If you wish to download video editing software, then you can click the links below
Personally, I would go with davinci resolve, only because it doesn’t offer a subscription-based plan, but it is your choice at the end of the day. The skill level it takes to get great at video editing is undetermined. Reason being is that different subjects require different editing. If you are doing a basic vlog with video cuts, then it would be a lot easier than doing a science-based video that requires days of research. If you want to eventually make money from video editing, its probably going to take some years and some time to get there! If you have a year to practice training on this skill, then this is what you would want to do.
Technical Writer
Technical writing is taking complicated instructions and material and transforming said content into simple instructions and material for the reader. If you have ever been in class, then you have taken notes from the instructor and had to revise your notes to make it simpler for yourself. If you can’t be at a physical location then you can do technical writing online and be an employee. In software and hardware, technical writers are just as important to help developers with their programming. Even if you are not in tech, you can use technical writing for employee guidelines, research protocols, how to guides, etc. If you want to learn where to learn technical writing, look here

This course is instructed by Kimmoy Matthews who is the best person that I can think of to help guide you through this industry and have success. Depending on the time frame it should take a couple months to a year to not only get skilled, but get a job in technical writing from her class! It is a paid course, but you will definitely get your moneys’ worth.
In all, for 2023, you should hunker down and learn a skill to not only make a living, but also continue learning so that you can turn your skill into a business.
